Application of Polypropylene (PP) in Automobile Engineering

Polypropylene raw materials are abundant, cheap, excellent in performance and widely used. The current development speed is the fastest among thermoplastics. The amount of the car can reach 10 kg to 20 kg per vehicle, and the number of parts can reach dozens. Mainly for body interior parts, ventilation and heating system accessories, engine related accessories and exterior parts. According to the installation position of the product on the automobile, different requirements are imposed on the product material, and the material is generally required to have heat resistance, impact resistance, aging resistance and high rigidity. Therefore, after the indicator is determined, the material of a certain grade can be selected, and the cost should be considered.
Since the requirements for plastic products for automobiles are higher than those for civilian products, ordinary polypropylene plastics can not meet the requirements for use on automobiles. Therefore, the development and application of modified polypropylene materials have developed rapidly in recent years, with polypropylene as the main body and others. Polymer blending is a simple and effective method for the modification of polypropylene. In general, a mixture of two or more kinds of high polymers can be used to prepare a mixture having the properties of these high polymers.
(1) Improve low temperature impact resistance. The addition of EPDM, polybutylene, butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, EVA, etc. to polypropylene can improve the impact strength of polypropylene, and in particular, can improve the low-temperature impact strength of polypropylene.
(2) Improve coloring. The addition of PA, PU, ​​polyacrylate, polyester, etc. to polypropylene can improve the colorability of polypropylene.
(3) Improve antistatic properties. Polypropylene is highly insulating, so it is easy to carry static electricity. The effect of adding antistatic agent alone is not so significant, such as mixing with polyvinyl alcohol, it has good antistatic effect.
(4) Flame retardancy. Polyethylene, like most plastics, can burn and has a high calorific value, which is extremely unfavorable for the application of polypropylene in automobiles. Therefore, flame retardancy is improved by adding a flame retardant or the like.
(5) Filling and reinforcing modified polypropylene. Polypropylene filled talcum powder, mica, calcium carbonate, glass microspheres, etc., can improve heat resistance rigidity, dimensional stability, etc., but the modification effect does not exceed the performance range of general-purpose resins, and does not reach the performance required for engineering plastics. Therefore, glass fibers may be added (the surface is treated to have a large affinity with the resin), and heat resistance rigidity, dimensional stability, creep resistance, mechanical strength, and the like can be improved.
