Nantong Textile Designer's Salon

In the context of home textile design, a pressing question arises: if a design pattern is modified, does it still constitute infringement? Are lace designs, as part of home textile accessories, protected by copyright? How can we enhance the efforts to combat design piracy in the home textile industry and promote higher professional ethics among designers? These critical issues were addressed during a social management innovation survey conducted by the Nantong Intermediate People’s Court and the Tongzhou District Court at the author spinning market within the Nantong Home Textiles City. Representatives from home textile enterprises, along with local business operators, shared their practical experiences and challenges in the field of copyright protection. Nantong has long been a pioneer in copyright protection within China's textile industry. Through coordinated efforts between administrative authorities, courts, and companies, the fight against piracy has become more effective. This has not only driven the development of the home textile industry but also contributed to the prosperity of the market, establishing what is now known as the “Nantong Experience” in copyright protection. The model has gained national recognition and is considered a global benchmark for intellectual property protection in China. However, as the industry continues to grow and competition intensifies, the demand for original designs and talented designers remains unmet. Copying and imitating new products still occur frequently, sometimes even faster than the release of the original. For instance, similar products often appear just 3 to 5 days after a new design is launched. In some cases, pirated works are copied during the printing and dyeing process, or sold covertly on the market. Participants in the discussion traced the root causes and agreed that addressing the issue requires improving the overall quality of the design team. Raising the entry standards for design studios, enhancing management and training for designers, and fostering stronger ethical values are essential steps. The goal should shift from merely combating piracy to reducing its occurrence through proactive measures. To achieve this, it was suggested that a Nantong Home Textiles Designer Salon or Association be established. This organization would set regulations, implement file management systems, build a credit system, organize expert training, and increase awareness of inter-provincial and provincial copyright protection efforts. By implementing these strategies, the city aims to elevate the overall design quality and long-term competitiveness of its home textile industry. Notable participants included representatives from well-known companies such as Three Homes, Golden Sun, Jiayusi, San Fu Island, Sanwei, Ximei, and Shengshi Dynasty, as well as staff from the Zhihao Copyright Management Office. Leaders from the Nantong Intermediate Court and the Tongzhou District Court will continue to engage with these stakeholders and submit constructive suggestions to higher authorities.
