sew + tell: lucie’s classic shirts

When I first laid eyes on Lucie’s crisp white Classic Shirt on Facebook, I knew instantly that it was something special. It turns out Lucie didn’t stop there—she also crafted a flowy crepe version with a completely different vibe. Today, she’s joining us for another installment of our Sew + Tell series to share her experiences with this timeless wardrobe staple. **Name:** Lucie **Where can we find you online?** Blog | Instagram **Pattern Used:** Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt **Country:** England **Fabrics Used:** - The first is a high-quality white cotton with a hint of stretch, sourced from Fabworks in West Yorkshire. - The second is a lightweight crepe featuring an animal print, purchased at Waltons Fabrics in Goldthorpe, South Yorkshire. **Did the fabrics work well?** Absolutely! Both fabrics were fantastic for this shirt pattern, offering distinct looks while maintaining the integrity of the design. ![Lucie has sewn six shirt patterns and declared the Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt the clear winner.](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e2fbf9b71550153ced24aaa2bd7633a3.jpeg) --- **Project Details:** - **White Shirt Link:** [Here](https://example.com/white-shirt) - **Crepe Shirt Link:** [Here](https://example.com/crepe-shirt) **How Did the Sewing Go?** This is the sixth shirt pattern I’ve attempted, each from a different designer. However, this one will undoubtedly become my go-to for creating a classic shirt. The pattern includes all the professional touches I adore: a back yoke, separate collar and collar band, tower sleeve placket, separate placket, and multiple pocket options. For the white shirt, I opted for a utilitarian aesthetic with pleated pockets and a button-down flap. To add a touch of femininity, I incorporated a Liberty lawn collar band. ![Lucie sewed two completely different versions of the Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt.](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/21b7b57482160c77cb78488ce2cd9824.jpg) For the crepe version, I kept the pockets simple and clean. One thing I appreciated was the variety of construction techniques, many of which were new to me. Cutting the sleeve placket into two pieces and using basting along fold lines ensured precise ironing and pressing. The instructions were top-notch! While practice makes perfect, these methods yielded my most professional-looking shirt yet. I plan to keep this pattern as a reference for future projects. This shirt is by far the most comfortable I’ve ever made. The bust darts come in A/B, C, and D cup sizes, allowing for a tailored fit. I chose size 4 for my A/B bust and found it to be perfectly long for tucking in. Despite being the same size, the crepe version exudes a much more relaxed vibe. Two entirely different moods from the same excellent pattern. ![Lucie’s two versions of the Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt showcase its versatility.](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/5ba1498e79fadbd458852bf4b8ab3b7f.jpg) I’ll mostly wear the white shirt to work, especially paired with my old Mango jacket. The crepe version, on the other hand, will be reserved for casual outings like shopping or lunch with friends. **What Was the Best Part?** I absolutely love every aspect of this pattern—the width across the back, the sleeve length, the body length, and the casual feel of the crepe version. It’s versatile, stylish, and endlessly adaptable. --- While this post may include some ads (thanks for sticking around!), I hope you enjoyed hearing Lucie’s story. If you’re looking to create your own classic shirt, the Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt pattern is a must-try. Let me know if you decide to sew one up—I’d love to see what you come up with! Happy sewing! --- *(Note: Links provided are examples and not actual URLs.)*
